Hello Spring Lucy. Thank you for your questions. As a maker of masks, allow me to deal with some of those questions. 1. Imagine if you took a full enclosure motorcycle helmet and duct taped the visor. That's essentially what you have in a Kigurumi Mask. There is padding inside to make the fit comfortable, which can adjust a commercial mask for many head sizes, but it impairs your ability to hear. If there is not enough ventilation in the mask, it can get hot and stuffy. Depending on the style of…

Hi Xelphie: It's always wonderful to see somebody new taking up the hobby. The fact that you have friends already who can support you is great. Sometimes it pays to actually see things up close, rather than rely on pictures. But you have come to the right place. I don't know how many of us there are, but you ask a question, and you will get a response. Doesn't matter what aspect you chose to ask about, this place has forums and threads, on just about anything. Best of all we don't bite. ( Can't …

Cici: Can any of our Japanese guests provide us with more historical background from Japan? Kiki

I've never been able to get a good answer to this question myself. My web search turned up pictures of what we would call Animegao Kigurumi characters as far back as 1986. I have some shots of Kigurumi performers that were at the Tokyo Toy show in 1996, at Comic Market 57 in 1999. However, I can't tell if these were fans or just performers hired by the companies who made the Anime, acting as mascots. Wikipedia tells us that Sailor Moon live action Musicals began in 1993 These were stage shows mu…

LOL When I go to the fabric store, I often find rolls of plastic mesh. Neat thing is that they are white. Really neat thing is that they can be colored with black magic marker. Assuming that I actually want to see through the mask's eyes, and not a vision slit, I just glue a square inside my masks over each eye socket hole. This acts as the sciera. I can then either paste a cutout made of photo paper which already has the Iris printed on it, onto each mesh eye, or hand draw the iris myself. Eithe…

I'm no expert here. But in my experience, any bodysuit / zentai /hadati, which is made out of stretch material, will expand to cover what you stuff inside. I've never seen one with enough elastic to compress beyond it's original dimensions. So my guess is buy one which fits your narrowest dimension. If that's your waist over your cincher, then go for that and let the rest of the suit stretch to cover your padding. Of course if it's custom fit all the way around, since you have one measurement (w…

Quote: “ Since I couldn't see anywhere else to ask this, I was wondering about padding for a more masculine look, but as other kig performers have problems with with achieving a lovely feminine silhouette. It's the trying to get a male figure, without hips and butt giving it away. As I may be an kinda stick shaped I still have hips and butt?” I know personally one performer who does or did male Kig. First thing to be considered, is the body type of the character you are portraying. Unfortunately…

Hey Cici: When you get the chance could you give us the final numbers for AN 2018? How many performers were in attendance? By my admittedly skewed perspective it looked like there were maybe 20-25 girls in the Sunday photo shoot. Over the weekend, I think I saw maybe 30-35 different characters. A list of who did what would be helpful. Did not get to see all the panels, but a summary would be nice. And how did the rest of the outings go? Kiki

Amari: As far as antiperspirant goes, no woman wants her little black dress stained with a white residue from her deodorant. Neither does she want her white blouses stained yellow the same way. That's why manufacturers for Feminine deodorants go the extra distance to create formulas that don't stain. You just have to check the labels. Like I said the side benefit is that they usually smell nice and girly. That can be a bonus if your Kig girl is going to get close to her audience. I have it strai…

Awoo: Assume that we are talking about open cell foam like used in Seat cushions. Just like the foam padding inside your mask, you can spray them with a 10% concentration of rubbing alcohol or isopropenol, or a 50% solution of vodka. This will kill any bacteria that would munch on your sweat, causing bad smells. let the pads air dry. This is the treatment you use overnight when you are wearing pads for multiple days. Once you get the opportunity to wash them properly, fill your tub with soapy wa…

Answer to question 1. I use alcohol. Isopropel alcohol, rubbing alcohol, diluted to 10% with water in a spray bottle. Wipe the inside of the mask after use and spray generously. Let dry. I have also been told use vodka, diluted 1:1 with water. This kills the bugs which can cause the bad smells and disinfects the mask and padding for the next user. Answer to question 2. You obviously want some kind of antiperspirant which leaves no yellow stains. not sure if the Gel forms are better than the cake…

We never actually met. I witnessed the two of you talking. The problem is, how do you convince somebody that you never met, that you are legit, when all you are wearing is street clothes. Just being at the panel does not necessarily equate to being an expert. Neither does participation in the forums confer expert status. Pics can be lifted from anywhere on the internet, and every piece of information needs to be checked and crosschecked. That's why I said nothing to the person you were talking t…

That was the facial balance in Japanese animation and Kigurumi panel, held Saturday Coconut. I believe that you were talking to a Kig in a pink outfit, who wanted to sit down for a face to face chat about Kigurumi. Miss Kiki

Two thoughts. Either set the whole costume, hadatai, and Mask on the table in front of you, so you can pick each piece up as needed, OR get someone to model the whole outfit and show off each piece as mentioned.

Many many years ago, one of my sensei swore by Jogging. It built up the cardio system, yet did not bulk up chest or arms. Body shaping can cover over hips and butts giving them the appropriate curves. Waist cinching can do wonders for your curves, but having taught abs helps. There's nothing exercise can do about wide shoulders or manly chests. but proper proportions in the mask and the bust, can disguise a lot. Kiki
