I was wondering what people's opinions of this sort of cosplay are and if it is considered kigurumi. I don't think I saw a discussion on here about this epic Toothiana cosplay, so now here's one. Personally, this and a voice changer is more my style than the traditional static kigurumi masks. youtube.com/watch?v=nAcaZbrbgSY
Does this count as Kigurumi cosplay?

Oh, she's legit, though the animatronic aspects of her cosplay and portraying a character outside the usual canon of anime inspiration is what sets her apart from the dollfie. kawaii moe contingent usually associated with kigurumi. My opinion: we have to remember there's a very talented artist and studio behind her mask, costume and animatronics. Still, she's a high effort cosplayer in a category plagued by lazy and very conventional and unimaginative attitudes and forms - at least when you're looking at Facebook. I see the bookmark of that YouTube video is over four and a half years old and the technologies for mobile eyes, ears, tails and other attributes have only improved and become more accessible.... so don't lie on your cot and sulk because now, your dreams are closer to realisation....^^..........Keep this in mind, in Hell the manager's name is Karen....'>......

Really glad this kind of thing is accepted here! The main reason I didn't make an account here for so long was I was nervous that this wasn't acceptable to post here. I appreciate mainstream kigurumi, and how hard it is to be the character with only one facial expression, but I have always wanted an animatronic fursuit since I can remember.
I really don't like the art style of this costume, but I really appreciate the craftmanship and other things documented on the maker's tumblr. http://makingtoothcostume.tumblr.com/
I have some other links to making silicone animatronic masks and voice changing I might dig up if anyone is curious. -
Ok, really long post with lots of links and images incoming.
But first here is a link to a video of that mask in action. Like I already mentioned before, not my aesthetic BUT the potential here is amazing.
makingtoothcostume.tumblr.com/…making-this-head-it-looks
Show Spoiler Here an example from that above tumblr with where the electonics, batteries, and cooling fans in the mask are housed.
Huge change from before
The mask uses the performer's jaw from what I can tell to move the mouth
An earlier version of the head underskull, the original post can be found here http://makingtoothcostume.tumblr.com/post/105812408101/nothing-on-this-project-was-easy-i-was-trying-to Pretty much lightly describing details with the mechanical eyelids and general face shape compared to the performer's face.
I will probably update this part later. It's all in the tumblr linked above and on youtube if you look up animatronic toothiana cosplay for now.
With enough of that tumblr out of the way, here is more of what I have found from obsessively googling on the topic.
Forgot all about this guys tutorial series. AMAZING for beginners and super friendly tone. Shame about the comments being gone now, some of them were really actually really helpful/interesting from what I remember...

I apologize for this mess of a post. Hopefully, the links are fun to look at, and some really clever people here get some more ideas from it all. I will be editing this from time to time to add everything I have and to make it... more organized than my computer.

That pretty cool progress. Keep us up on your progress.
None of the posts here is about a mask progress but pics she found. This kind of response is why people avoid this forum as it sounds like made by a bot, due to being out of context like if none of the posts were read.

Also if anybody has any input on any of the links or anything to contribute on animatronics in kigurumi cosplay, please do! This needs to be a thing and I didn't know a better way to get people talking about this concept.
Just keep on researching. yeah there will be people giving negative replies but let's not fall into their self absorbed narratives and gaslighting. but we are interested in your progress. that's what this site was created for. -

Umm I am not comfortable saying I am working on something right now when I am just at the obsessively googling phase and barely know anything about soldering ^^; I have a few characters I have my heart set on that would need to be animatronic for me to even consider getting a mask of them but I am just trying to figure out the basics of basics right now... And getting over fears of screwing up something highly experimental AND expensive... MANY... TIMES. Also most likely dangerous too o.o
Sorry if I disappointed anyone, I just don't want people to think I am some animatronic expert when I am just beginning as everyone does at some point in any hobby.

You can share what you're working on when you're comfortable with doing so @Ribbon-Kitten
As you work through the design and start building your project you will flub up but, that's how you learn. Mistakes are so much more time consuming than successes but the learning curve flattens as you go.
Hobby away and remember to have fun! That's what we're up to here. That and sharing positive experiences. -
In regards to the IoT ideas,
I've had some experience with ESP8266 micro-controllers and people out in the world have made some crafty things with them. You may want to have a look into them if you have any familiarity with the Arduino ecosystem. I did actually get a working remote thermal sensor with one talking to my iPhone over HTTP one time.
I can also suggest PICAXE chips; whilst they are easy to program for with BASIC syntax, you find you'll be hitting the ceiling limits with them rather easily.
I hope this info is useful. -
Oh, I found this from 2018...
20180614-1.jpg
On Flickr
It's a custom op-amp-based fan controller I designed and derived from an old DIY kit (upper, larger controller) from more than 13 years ago.
I made it to run off of 5-to-6-volt battery packs, and it's slightly smaller than a fully grown adult's pinkie finger at approx 0.6x1.9".
